PTA Approved vs Non-PTA Phone — Full Difference Explained (2026)

Non-PTA phones are cheaper but come with serious risks in Pakistan. We explain the full difference between PTA approved and non-PTA phones — taxes, SIM issues, resale value.

PTA Registration — Why It Matters

Since 2019, Pakistan's PTA requires all mobile phones to be registered. Unregistered phones are now being blocked from cellular networks. This affects millions of grey market phone users in Pakistan.

What Happens to Non-PTA Phones

When you bring a non-PTA phone to Pakistan, PTA gives a grace period (usually 60 days) during which the phone works normally. After this period, the phone loses cellular connectivity — calls and mobile data stop working. WiFi continues to work. Essentially, a non-PTA blocked phone becomes an expensive tablet.

How to Check if Your Phone is PTA Approved

Dial *8484# and enter your IMEI number (found under Settings > About Phone). You will receive an SMS telling you if your phone is registered or not.

Cost to Register a Non-PTA Phone

You can pay duty to register a non-PTA phone through the DIRBS system at pta.gov.pk. The cost depends on the phone's declared value. For a phone worth $500, the duty can be PKR 40,000 to 60,000.

Resale Value Difference

PTA approved phones have significantly higher resale value. A non-PTA iPhone 16 sells for 30-40% less than the PTA approved version in the used market.

Our Recommendation

Always buy PTA approved phones. The short-term savings from grey market are negated by: blocked phone risk, lower resale value, no official warranty, and registration fees.
